During his prestigious career he has numerous position such as scientific researcher and deputy scientific director of the Institute of Art History of the Romanian Academy. In 1994 he was elected Secretary General of the International Association for South-East European Studies (AIESEE).

Between 1990-1992 he was the president of the Romanian Television, and between 1992-2000 a member of the National Audiovisual Council. In 2000 he was named Minister of Culture and Cults.

Laureate of the “Nicolae Balcescu” Awards of the Romanian Academy and “Gottfried von Herder” of the University of Vienna.

Doctor Honoris Causa of several prestigious Romanian universities: The University of Oradea, University of Arts in Cluj-Napoca, West University of Timisoara and of the University of Craiova.

He was awarded the titles of Commander of the Orders of Arts and Letters of the French Republic and Grand Officer of the National Order of Merit of Romania.
